The FOGSL Annual Wader Workshop

The Annual Wader Field workshop organized by the FOGSL was held at Bundala National Park and its
surroundings, including a visit to the Debora Wewa from 17-20th December 2010.

It offered a good opportunity for the participants to learn identification tips of waders migrating to the country annually to overcome the harsh winters of the north. The lectures given by Prof Sarath Kotagama and Ms Shamila Perera provided an overview on wetlands, the issues threatening their survival and the basic techniques on how to conduct a wader survey.

122 birds including large number of migrants were recorded from the Bundala village, Bundala salterns, the Embilikala lagoon marshes near to Weligatta Junction and from the Deobra wewa.
