EXEMPLARY CITIZENS THROUGH CONSERVATION

Managed by: Professor Sarath Kotagama and Aruna Padmaperuma
Present Status: In Progress

Following the concepts of conservation clearly implies an exemplary citizen with a life style of contentment, and respect of social obligation. To achieve this objective require a vehicle that is close to oneself and contains the necessary life skills. Nature studies and bird watching brings respect to nature, creates in the bird watcher the humane qualities of a good citizen.

Fogsl since its inception in 1976 has been striving to achieve this ideal through its programmes. Over the years we have developed methodologies to increase the interest of the membership and students at large through various programmes. Among them are :-

* the “Schools Environment Programme” – this programme is the only programme in Sri Lanka that has been ongoing unbroken for 15 years in over 20 schools in the Gampaha and Colombo districts and a few outstation schools. It has a flexible but fixed syllabus, offered to students during their school time as supplement to their current learning.

* The “2000 by 2000” programme – The programme was launched in 1997 to support 2000 school based Bird/ Environment study Units, with the participation and support from the Mahapola Graduates Foundation. Our efforts resulted in the programme been extended well beyond 2000 and meeting the targets. The programme wrapped up by 2002. We however, continue to support many of the established school study units.
